COVID
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- Loss of smell and taste have been highlighted as potential symptoms related to Covid-19 and are a common complaint in the dental office. The diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 virus in ambulatory settings in patients with minimal to no symptoms is critical in order to contain the spread and support full recovery. Smell and taste loss were reported by 68% and 71% of 59 Covid-19–positive patients; in 203 Covid-19–negative patients, the values decreased to 16% and 17% from a pool of patients with influenza-like symptoms. In addition, a strong association was observed with smell (aOR, 10.9) and taste (aOR, 10.2) impairment in Covid-19–positive patients.
- Chemosensory dysfunction is a common symptom associated with multiple diseases, conditions, and medications. The change in smell and taste reported by asymptomatic patients during oral health exams should be investigated as possibly associated with Covid-19 infection, and dental procedures should be delayed until the patient is cleared by a primary health physician.
