To summarize and adapt descriptions of these steps, the first jhana is
accompanied by applied and sustained attention, with bliss and happiness.
In the second jhana, there is bliss and happiness as well as inner clarity and
one-pointedness, and applied and sustained attention subside. In the third,
there is happiness in the body and abiding in equanimity as bliss fades
away. The fourth has neither elation nor distress, neither pain nor pleasure,
and purity of mindfulness due to equanimity.
