Kessler Syndrome is named after NASA scientist Donald J. Kessler.
It describes a possible chain reaction of collisions in low Earth orbit.
When a satellite is destroyed, it produces many pieces of debris.
These debris fragments can collide with other satellites and create even more debris.
This can lead to a self-sustaining cycle of collisions.
Objects in low Earth orbit travel at around 17,500 mph (5 miles per second).
Because of these extreme speeds, even tiny pieces of debris, such as paint flakes, can cause serious damage.
A small object can carry enormous kinetic energy when traveling at orbital velocity.
We have not necessarily reached a full Kessler Syndrome scenario, but the risk is increasing.
Thousands of new satellites are being launched by governments and private companies.
More satellites mean more objects to track and more opportunities for collisions.
The major concern is that one collision could create debris that causes many additional collisions.
If the problem becomes severe enough, certain orbital regions could become increasingly difficult or dangerous to use.
The key issue is therefore not one satellite being destroyed, but the possibility of a continuous chain reaction of orbital debris.
