  • Objects in low Earth orbit travel at around 17,500 mph (5 miles per second).

  • Because of these extreme speeds, even tiny pieces of debris, such as paint flakes, can cause serious damage.

  • A small object can carry enormous kinetic energy when traveling at orbital velocity.

  • We have not necessarily reached a full Kessler Syndrome scenario, but the risk is increasing.

  • Thousands of new satellites are being launched by governments and private companies.

  • More satellites mean more objects to track and more opportunities for collisions.
