Kuchi-zamishii (口寂しい / くちさみしい) is a Japanese expression that literally means “lonely mouth.”
It describes the feeling of wanting to eat even when you’re not actually hungry — just because your mouth feels bored, empty, or you want something to nibble on.
It’s commonly used for:
- Snacking while watching TV
- Eating out of boredom or habit
- Wanting gum, chips, or sweets just to have something in your mouth
- Late-night “I’m not hungry but I want something” cravings
Example:
- 「お腹すいてないけど、口寂しい。」
“I’m not hungry, but my mouth feels lonely.”
It’s similar to:
- “mindless snacking”
- “boredom eating”
- “oral fixation” (but less clinical)
There’s a cultural nuance too — in Japan people often keep small snacks, tea, or gum specifically for kuchi-zamishii moments.
