3 Eshanas. BPL

The Three Eshanās (त्री एषणाः) are fundamental desires mentioned in Indian philosophy, especially in the Upanishads and later Vedantic thought.

The 3 Eshanās (Three Basic Human Desires)

  1. वित्तेषणा (Vitteshanā) – Desire for wealth
    • Hunger for money, possessions, security, power
    • Includes status, comfort, material success

  2. पुत्रेषणा (Putreshanā) – Desire for progeny
    • Desire for children, family continuity, legacy
    • Also extends to name, fame, and being remembered

  3. लोकैषणा (Lokaishanā) – Desire for worlds / recognition
    • Desire for pleasure, honor, recognition, or even heaven
    • Includes craving for praise, respect, and spiritual rewards

Spiritual Meaning

  • These three desires bind a person to samsara (cycle of birth and death).
  • Moksha (liberation) is attained by transcending all three eshanās.
  • A true sannyasi or enlightened being is said to be free from them.

📜 Source: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

“When all desires that dwell in the heart are let go,

then the mortal becomes immortal.”

If you want, I can:

  • Explain the 3 eshanās vs 4 purusharthas
  • Relate them to Lord Shiva / renunciation
  • Give simple real-life examples

Just tell me 🙏
