There’s a story about Ramana Maharshi that might help answer your question.
A woman visited his ashram briefly and stayed at the guest house.
She was quite miserable and tense.
On her first morning, she went and sat in the ashram.
When she returned to the guest house, she was completely transformed.
Her face shone with serenity.
“What happened?” the other guests asked.
“Nothing happened,” she said.
They looked at each other in confusion.
“You seem … different,” someone ventured.
“I’m the same as I ever was,” she replied.
Exactly.
When your desire for peace is great enough, you will surrender yourself to it.
You will realize it’s your true home.
When this happens, it will be like nothing happened.
That’s why we call it going home.
Update 1/11/2021: I heard this beautiful story third-hand, but yesterday I happened to find a youtube video of Katya Davis (formerly Kitty Osborne) giving a first-hand account of this woman’s visit. Her description confirms the above, and is also very funny and lovely.
One correction: the Osborne house wasn’t officially a “guest house;” just a house where new visitors happened to stay.
