PSYCHD X COOL

How the weather affects people’s mental health.

Hot weather is linked to worse mental health, new research finds.

When the temperature goes above around  15 DEG C    60 – 70°F, people are more likely to report mental health problems.

In particular, if the weather is hot for around 10 days or more, each additional day of heat takes a toll on people’s mental health.

Cooler weather — below around 60°F — is linked to better mental health.

Indeed, just a few days of cooler weather is enough to improve people’s mental well-being.

The effect of weather on mental health may be partly explained by sleep.

People sleep better in cooler weather and for longer.

This might help to explain why sustained cold weather is not consistently linked to poor mental health: although cold weather is unpleasant, at least you can sleep.
