DWM LONELINESS REDUCES LIFESPAN

Loneliness is the biggest threat to human longevity.

Social distancing has a wide range of negative effects on mind and body, a new study underlines.

Being lonely causes problems with memory and reasoning, affecting the brain’s connectivity and function.

It makes people more susceptible to common problems like depression and anxiety.

Moreover, loneliness spreads through social networks, increasing the risk of death wherever it goes.

The body also suffers from loneliness: feeling socially isolated makes people more likely to die.

It affects the body’s hormones and resistance to disease.

Unfortunately, feeling lonely damages the immune system.

In contrast, people who feel socially integrated experience stronger immune function, with lower levels of C-reactive protein (a key indicator of inflammation).

They are also more likely to have lower blood pressure and lower body weight and stronger overall physiological functions.
