Useful investigations to investigate respiratory symptoms in children with neurodisability (ND)
- Chest X-ray is readily available; however, interpretation may be difficult in the presence of scoliosis.
- Chest CT scan is useful to investigate persisting signs or chest X-ray changes when bronchiectasis is suspected.
- pH or impedance studies for assessment of gastro-oesophageal reflux.
- Videofluoroscopy for assessing aspiration of various consistencies of foods.
- Overnight oximetry, capnography and polysomnography to investigate obstructive events in sleep.
- Cough swabs and sputum for microbiology.
- Basic immunological investigations including antibody levels and responses to vaccination.
- Blood gases during acute presentations to assess respiratory status.
