In China, it attracted the rich aristocrats first. In Tibet, it was firmly rooted in the aristocracy. In the United States, it’s taken hold first in the upper middle class (might as well be the aristocracy here).
History would seem to suggest that outside of India, it’s typically the privileged that turn to Buddhism first.
