TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- The authors of this Chinese study found that sleeping longer is associated with a higher risk of stroke. This association was found both for longer sleep at night (≥9 hours; HR, 1.23) and midday naps longer than 90 minutes (HR, 1.25). This association was not noted for people who slept fewer than 6 hours per night. There was a notable increase in stroke risk associated with poor sleep quality.
- Long sleep duration and midday napping appear to be associated with the risk of incident stroke. It remains unclear why sleeping fewer hours does not have a similar association.
