Ankyloglossia, also known as tongue-tie, is a congenital oral anomaly caused by an unusually short, thick lingual frenulum, a membrane connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth, which may decrease tongue mobility (Figure 1).
Rates of ankyloglossia appear to have increased dramatically from 6.86 to 22.6 per 1,000 live births between 2002 and 2014 (1). It is perceived as an addressable barrier to breastfeeding with 63.9% of infants with this diagnosis receiving frenotomy, rates which also increased from 3.76 to 14.7 per 1,000 live births (1).
