NIGHTMARE PREP

One reason that people have scary dreams.
Bad dreams help prepare us for real fear-inducing situations, new research suggests.
People react better to frightening situations when they have fearful dreams in advance.
We seem to simulate scary scenarios during the night at least partly to help us cope better with their real counterparts during the day.
The adaptive nature of our nighttime emotions may only cover bad dreams, though, not nightmares, the neuroscientists think.
Once dreams are too scary, they may cease to be beneficial.
