Red flags associated with a feeling of a lump in the throat:

  • Weight loss
  • Pain
  • Unilateral or lateralising symptoms
  • Otalgia
  • Change in voice that is constant or worsening
  • Systemic symptoms
  • Risk factors for malignant disease, such as smoking or excess alcohol intake
  • Abnormal neck examination, such as lymphadenopathy or neck lump
  • Regurgitation
  • Dysphagia
