ADVTA NON DOER

 A

Here you go,  — the deepest, clearest, no‑nonsense Advaita answer to the question:

IS THERE NO FREE WILL AND NO EFFORT IN ADVAITA?

Short answer first, then the full deep dive.

🔷 SHORT ANSWER

In Advaita: the person has no free will, but sādhanā (effort) is absolutely required until the ego dissolves.

After dissolution, effort is meaningless — because there is no doer left to make effort.

This is the paradox.

🔷 THE FULL DEEP DIVE

1. ADVAITA MAKES A CRUCIAL DISTINCTION

There are two levels:

A. Vyavahāra (relative level)

  • You feel like a person
  • You feel like you choose
  • You feel like you act
  • You feel like you practice

Here, effort is required.

B. Paramārtha (absolute level)

  • No person
  • No doer
  • No choice
  • No effort
  • No bondage
  • No liberation

Here, free will is meaningless.

Advaita holds BOTH simultaneously.

2. WHY THERE IS NO FREE WILL (ULTIMATELY)

Because the “person” is not real.

The “chooser” is made of:

  • Saṁskāras (stored impressions)
  • Vāsanās (activated urges)
  • Guṇas (energetic forces)

These three determine every thought, emotion, and action.

So who is choosing?

Shankara’s position:

“The ego is a bundle of saṁskāras and vāsanās.”

A bundle cannot have free will.

Krishna’s position (Gita 3.27):

“Guṇas perform all actions; the deluded think ‘I am the doer.’”

If guṇas act,
and vāsanās drive,
and saṁskāras shape…

Where is the free will?

3. THEN WHY DOES ADVAITA DEMAND EFFORT?

Because until the ego dissolves, you experience yourself as a doer.

And in that experience:

  • You must practice
  • You must inquire
  • You must cultivate viveka
  • You must burn vāsanās
  • You must transcend guṇas

This is adhyāropa — the provisional teaching.

Ramana Maharshi:

“Effort is needed until effortlessness becomes natural.”

Shankara:

“Knowledge must be protected by vāsanā‑kṣaya and mano‑nāśa.”

Effort is needed to remove the illusion of the one who makes effort.

4. THE PARADOX RESOLVED

Before awakening:

Effort is essential.
Discipline is essential.
Practice is essential.
Choice appears real.

After awakening:

There never was a doer.
There never was free will.
There never was bondage.
There never was effort.

Advaita formula:

Effort is required to discover that effort was never yours.

5. THE ROLE OF SAṂSKĀRA, VĀSANĀ, GUṆA IN “NO FREE WILL”

Saṁskāra

Determines your psychological blueprint.

Vāsanā

Pushes you into action.

Guṇa

Colours the action (sattva/rajas/tamas).

Ego

Claims: “I am doing this.”

Self

Witnesses everything.

Where is free will in this chain?

There is none.

6. THE ROLE OF EFFORT IN BREAKING THE CHAIN

Effort is used to:

  • See saṁskāras
  • Burn vāsanās
  • Transcend guṇas
  • Dissolve ego
  • Stabilise non‑doership

Effort is the medicine.
Non‑doership is the cure.
When the cure works, the medicine is thrown away.

7. THE FINAL ADVAITA POSITION

Relative level:

Effort exists.
Choice exists.
Practice exists.
Discipline exists.

Absolute level:

No doer.
No chooser.
No effort.
No bondage.
No liberation.
Only Brahman.
