Great question! I’ll go with Ramana Maharshi’s answer here - it's very clear.

It’s crucial to realize we can always rest in present awareness.

Awareness is the Self.

What causes us to abide in the Self, or not?

Self-abidance is like sitting under a shady tree on a hot day.

Those who abide in the Self never leave the shade of the tree.

Those who have caught glimpses but don’t abide are like people who leave the shade to wander in the sun.

Why would they do this?

They do it, ironically, because they feel cool and happy in the shade.

But they falsely believe they must seek comfort by wandering in the sun.

When we abide in the Self, we have made the connection between wandering in the sun and being hot.

Self-abidance means we have realized wandering is unnecessary.

Our wandering activity doesn’t solve our problems - it perpetuates them and defines them.

Our self-propelled efforts and thoughts are therefore useless redundancies.

All is well without your intervention; you will never be happy if you try to intervene.

Abide in the Self and all will be well.
