Thumb artery

The main artery of the thumb is called the:

🩸

Princeps pollicis artery

Key points:

  • It is the primary blood supply to the thumb
  • It usually branches off from the Radial artery in the hand
  • It runs along the palmar (front) side of the thumb
  • It supplies both the muscles and skin of the thumb

Supporting artery

There’s also a smaller companion vessel:

  • Radialis indicis artery
    • Supplies the side of the index finger next to the thumb
    • Often arises near the same point as the princeps pollicis artery

Why it matters

  • It’s important in hand injuries and surgery
  • Damage to it can affect thumb movement and healing due to reduced blood flow

If you want, I can show you a simple diagram of where it runs in the hand.
