mudita v upekkha

 a

Mudita vs Upekkha — both are part of the Four Immeasurables in Buddhism, but they feel quite different in practice:

😊 Mudita (Sympathetic Joy)

  • Means joy in others’ happiness or success

  • Opposite of envy or jealousy

  • Example: genuinely feeling happy when someone else succeeds

👉 It’s an active, warm, celebratory emotion

⚖️ Upekkha (Equanimity)

  • Means balanced, even-minded awareness

  • Staying steady through pleasure, pain, gain, loss

  • Example: remaining calm whether things go well or badly

👉 It’s a calm, stable, non-reactive state

🔑 Key Difference

  • Mudita = “I’m happy that you’re happy” (emotional expansion outward)

  • Upekkha = “I remain balanced no matter what happens” (inner stability)

🧠 How they work together

  • Mudita prevents resentment and comparison

  • Upekkha prevents emotional overwhelm and attachment

Together, they create a mindset that is both joyful and steady.

If you want, I can show how these map onto the “blessing everything” practice you shared—they align surprisingly well.
