Species like Aedes aegypti are most attracted when carbon dioxide (from breathing) + dark visual targets are present together. Either cue alone is much less effective.

Mosquitoes aren’t following each other—they each respond individually to the same signals (like CO₂ and dark colors), which is why they all end up in the same place.


3. You can reduce bites by changing signals

Wearing light-colored clothing and minimizing cues (like exposed skin + CO₂ concentration around your head/shoulders) can make you less attractive to them.
