Severe Obesity Is Associated With Higher In-Hospital Mortality in Patients With COVID-19
A cohort of 200 patients admitted to hospital in New York with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was retrospectively assessed to evaluate the association between obesity and outcomes. The median body mass index (BM)I was 30 kg/m2. Factors associated with an increased risk of mortality were BMI ≥35 kg/m2, male sex, and increasing age. These factors also predicted an increased need for oxygenation and the need for intubation.
- Obesity, along with increasing age and male sex, was associated with worse outcomes in patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
