P STATUS EPILEPTICUS
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- The authors conducted a population‐based retrospective study of status epilepticus (SE) in children with data between 2008 and 2015 drawn from the German healthcare system to capture the burden of this disease state. The overall incidence of SE was found to be 17.6 per 100,000: 11.4 per 100,000 of nonrefractory SE, 3.9 per 100,000 of refractory SE, and 2.3 per 100,000 in super-refractory SE cases. The authors also reported the overall costs to the system and median length of stay associated with each subtype of SE, with the mean SE cost approximately €15,880 per admission and median length of stay 7 days. The overall mortality rate was 3.0.
- This is a very important discussion of the burden of SE showing that the condition is not uncommon and the mortality of super-refractory SE is almost 1 in 10, even in the pediatric population.
