I just watched Exercise in Fatality with Robert Conrad again. I thought I had the ending clearly understood in which Columbo shows him how the tied shoelaces didnt match.
Just a quick review: Conrad/Milo kills Phillip Burns/Gene Stafford in the gym while the victim is in street clothes. He then removes victim's shoes replacing them with gym sneakers on the dead mans feet.
At the end Columbo cleverly notes that tying your show on your foot has the large loop of the lace on the big toe side. But when lacing up a show facing the front of it, such as bending down and lacing your child's loose laces, results in the large loop on the side of the small toe. Columbo concludes they had to have been tied by Conrad
Ok so I've seen this episode a few times and just assumed he was correct. But this time I tried it on my own shoes and I would ask that you try this experiment too.
With both my shoes being tied, the large loop on the "right" foot is over the big toe. And doing the other foot has the large loop on the LEFT foot is over the little toe.
Which means that Columbo never differentiated between which foot had which loop. Your left foot's lacing is the reverse of your right foot's lacing.
So when he showed the victims shoes and they were BOTH with the Large loop over the small toe- it's Wrong.
Please take a look at that episode some time, watch his shoe tying, and then tie your own shoes. It won't be the same. Thanks for checking it and helping.
