Very common drugs used to treat a variety of conditions, such as depression and hayfever, are linked to a 50 percent increased risk of dementia, research finds.
The class of drugs are called anticholinergic and are used to treat all sorts of problems including:
- mood disorders,
- allergies,
- gastrointestinal disorders,
- pulmonary disease,
- and Parkinson’s.
Four commonly used drugs which have strong anticholinergic effects are:
- Doxepin (Sinequan) – an older antidepressant.
- Chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton) – an antihistamine used to treat hayfever.
- Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) – another antihistamine often used to treat hayfever and sometimes used to aid sleep.
- Oxybutynin (Ditropan) – for bladder control.
